Where were you Ananya? – A fiction

the hug

Where were you Ananya?

She walked passed the corridor and placed her suitcase looking at the small temple where a diya lit like her unwavering faith. As she left the house keys on the key stand above the shoe rack he came out of the study his bluetooth on his ear.

“Where are you going?” he questioned with a gesture.

She turned to face the door.

“Ananya” he excused himself from the call. “Where were you?” he surprised himself with what he just asked.

Ananya turned to her love and with with a tight smile spoke

“I?”

She looked at him for a minute the longest in the last she remembered seeing him.

“I was here Rohan. Lying somewhere in your life.” She paused.

“I was right here stacked among host of messages on your Whatsapp. I also stood in between the tight deadlines over months. Didn’t you notice me in the several voicemails.” her eyes brimmed as she spoke slowly and softly.

“I was that fleeting thought that would have passed as you busily worked on your submission. Didn’t you see me Rohan? I was trying to share a smile when you commuted after work to go to an important dinner. I waived at you over an occupied Saturday movie and a Sunday photography session. I was that struggle that got tossed between work and hobby. Colleagues and friends. I was that time between a work week and a deserved unwind. I was right there just out of your sight.” she spoke without a tinge of sarcasm.

“Oh is it?” her pain barely reached him, “So where was I Ananya?”

“You jaan?” Ananya swallowed a lump and spoke.

“You were the page I turned as I read a book. You were the blanket I cuddled on cold mornings alone in bed. You were the half filled tea cup I spoke to for hours sharing my petty gossips. You were the smile that faded when I heard our favourite song. You were the phone call that I never missed to make during lunch. You were there in my questions, in my feelings and in every emotion.”

The rage, the anger melted in seconds. That was Rohan’s heart. A silent tear rushed passed Rohan’s warm cheek as he took small steps towards his first love.

“Ani, I am sorry. Can we not work on this.” he gently held Ananya.

“Rohan.” she placed her palm on his rough beard. “We haven’t lost it all. I am still Ani for you.”

She could bear any storm but not a tear in his eyes. He embraced her in his arms as she rose to her toes giving it all once again. May be the times had changed but the solace the hug brought hadn’t.

“Miss you Rohan” She hugged tighter digging her face in his chest.

The Verdict

“Do you realize what you have done?” she asked ashamed.

“Yes, but it just happened and I didn’t initiate it, Sunil did.” He said without remorse.

“And more over Pa says, I will be out in 10 days.” He continued, eating the first morsel from the tiffin.

“Yes, sure you will be, have you wondered you spoiled a young girl’s life? The media has exposed her name…newspapers are running stories on her like an autobiography. Where would she get work, who would marry her? Don’t you feel sorry for what you did?” She almost screamed.

“Are you my mother or hers? She shouldn’t have been in a pub at 11 pm in the first place. Delhi anyway is not a safe place. On top of it, she started arguing with Sunil when all he had done was to ask her to dance with him as she looked really hot. Her telling him ‘be a man and back-off’ cost her. Good she will now never try it again, she knows how much of men we four are.” he said sarcastically, drinking the kheer his mother had brought in the tiffin.

“Yes son you are so right, I was relieved when the nurse had announced it’s a boy as I was under a lot of pressure from your grandparents. Your father’s joy knew no bounds as his business empire got an heir. I know I cannot reverse what happened to the girl but this is my way of proving to her that I am by her side. And all I pray God today is may you be born as a woman the next birth.”  She said wrapping the tiffin containers, as her son turned blue oozing froth from his mouth.

Eternal Embrace!

The henna applied hand moved fervently searching the bed
The face hid under the sheet, and palm moved on the bed creases

She couldn’t find him, her heart raced
The sunrays beamed on her glowing face as she peeped out of the sheet

She scanned the room with a quick glance and trembling hands….
Picking up the sheet wrapped around she dragged out of the bed
“Rohan”….she bequeathed her voice to the room…
Her eyes fell on the large mirror that adorned one corner of the room
She felt the deep red mark on her neck with her fingers
She smiled at the miniscule vermillion that spread on her forehead
The reverie instantly broke with the realisation of his absence
Each second passed like a lifetime…she clenched the wrapped sheet
Tears welled, thoughts rushing, her heart playing the angel and the devil
The sound of the door opening ameliorated her
She turned; the tear just left her eyes, passing down her cheek
He stood there, with a bunch of her favourite yellow lilies in his hand
He placed them on the entrance table as she stormed towards him
She left the wrapped sheet on the way and rose to her feet and hugged hard
He said nothing just embraced her with all might knowing her state
“I love you, Ananya! Ananya I love you!”

Beyond Mortal!

He asked her “Ananya, What are we?”

You are the Sun and I the Earth moving around you.
Your rage burns me but without you nothing blooms on me too.

He asked her “Where do we belong?”

We belong beyond time and this world,
When lovers like us are born, they cannot belong anywhere but to each other!

What is our path?
There is no path, no destiny, no end, and no start. It’s just a journey of two inseparable souls.

Where do we unite?
Unison in this world is temporary, we unite when I look at you, we unite when you touch me, and in all gestures of love we unite beyond mortals.

Would we stay?
She smiled, teary eyed, can the wave stop coming back to the shore?
Every time I search you, look for you and call you and every time you say, when did I ever go, my hand is still in yours Ananya…we stay!

Unconditional relations do exist!

I don’t remember a single time that my mom forgets to shower her blessings on me when I call. Her blessings start with may I have good health, get what I desire and be happy always, but one thing that is added to this is I be strong and practical. And there is no time for these coming in, I’m in bus and I call, the blessings are there, I am eating and I call they are ready, I get up in the morning and call and they are with me.  So coming to the “new kid on the block blessing” of me being strong and practical, I asked her and she in her chirpy tone (my mom is just 16 years older to me J) said, you know Sweety, the way you are sensitive and emotional – I added this to the list to all time remind you that be strong and practical in all walks of life, not because that would change anything in you but all relations are such now that they require a practical approach.

In my head I agreed with her completely and responded, “Ma, one relation is totally unconditional and never for a purpose.” She smiled; I could feel it on the phone.

Love you ma.
