Śāntam {peace} – Navras 9

Yazidi

She closed her beautiful green eyes, glimpses of her father take her to the market appeared, her mom feed her home made ice cream emerged, her teenage friends walking across the garden in Sinjar collecting flowers made her smile.

Another deep breath as she pulled the trigger, peace prevailed and ended her three month ordeal. The three months of horror from her abduction by the evil heads to her being sold in the market place, the old man checking her teeth, stomach and eyes, her being snatched, shared and eaten like a piece of meat by a pack of wolves night after night in the name of what they called religion that permitted to do so.

She smiled again peacefully as she pulled the trigger one more time this time harder than before. The strong, over sized body that stole her identity, her confidence, her right to pray lay lifeless in front of her, she stamped it, kicked it and ran faster than her tender feet could.

Peace as she learnt in school was freedom from disturbance and for her peace now prevailed as she saw the border of her village like a horizon she could reach, the rescuers waiting to relieve her.

Peace is not always a positive connotation. As the last emotion of Navras, I bring forth peace in a different light. Again a non-fiction, a reality of todays’ times. Thousands of Yazidi women are taken as sex slaves by the ISIS terrorists who believe their religion permits killing men and abducting women. August 2014 saw a mass massacre of around 5000 Yazidi’s in the Iraq town of Sinjar.

I pray for people suffering and may God grant them peace always.

A big thank you to Shashank for standing by, being there patiently though restless is his synonym through the entire series. Will make up for all the lost time j. Read an equally powerful emotion on his blog here.

And a very big thank you to all my friends who provided constant motivation through reading all posts and posting comments.

  1. Very powerful ! In my first read, I thought she committed suicide, because that seems like a normal thing to do in these cases. I was glad to re-read and find it otherwise :).

The setting and the narration reminded me of one of my own works when I wrote on a similar theme with a fictitious account of the Delhi rape case convict.

Let me know what you think of it…

P.S. please be more active on twitter. I love your writing but miss out on posts as I don’t know where to find the links!

    1. Giving up life is an easy way out but to live it is difficult, I agree in reality too thousands of Yazidi women have committed suicide, but I wanted to depict victory over evil, victory for peace. Thanks for the link Prateek, will surely check it out 🙂

  2. Fire burns in her eyes. The amazing picture of the girl i saw for the first time in SPAN an American magazine many years back. Your tale leaves an impact!

  3. What I liked about this post is interweaving creativity for a better cause humanitarian…we as writer and blogger have tremendous power to influence too…

  4. Dark, dark and dark! Dark is menacingly beautiful at times. Dark is peaceful too. Just love your posts for their sombre tones. They always make me read them twice. Once hurriedly, to see what’s in the store and then slowly, savoring each word and trying to feel the emotions of the protagonist.

You never disappoint, neither cease to amaze, ma’am! A very beautiful story. Just love the series by you and Shashank. 🙂

    1. Dark it is….and that’s what makes me write…till the time there is hope and light at the end of it…it is worth going through the darkness 🙂 Am happy I am able to live up to your expectations Rakesh 🙂 Well this is the second series we are writing together, it is fun to write with him 🙂

    1. thank you so much Sunaina for liking the post, and a special thank you to you for being there constantly to motivate me to do well. (thank you for bringing up the typos, I corrected them) 🙂

  5. Powerful. You brought peace in a different light indeed. The happiness to relive the normal again, that seemed quite impossible. Such a strong message capturing the evil of the world today. Brilliant Ananya. Adding to that, this is such a memorable series for us going through the emotions, catching up, and well, pushing each other to finish it. I am glad we did it together 🙂 Many more to come j

    1. thank you so much j, for liking the post and walking by me through the series. On second thoughts do you know we took more time to write nine posts than all of April we wrote A-Z seeeeeee 🙂 (pulls your leg and runs away)

  6. Beautifully written, powerful words. One could just visualize them while reading loved it to bits and thanks for your stand

  7. Beautifully written Shweta, heart breaking too. Every time I come across things like these, I wonder what makes people do such heinous crimes. How could some principles laid down by some random people cause so much of destruction and why doesn’t it work the other way round?
Why isn’t the good set of instructions stopping all these crimes? There sure is something lacking in the latter.
